The Artist

Charles Stepney

Chicago-born composer, producer and arranger Charles Stepney is known to some for his work with Earth, Wind & Fire, Deniece Williams, and Ramsey Lewis, or for his work with Chess Records in the 1960s, where he was an essential creative force behind seminal recordings by Rotary Connection, Minnie Riperton, Marlena Shaw, Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf, Terry Callier, The Dells, The Emotions, and many many more. In the decades since his untimely death in 1976, the presence of his name in liner notes and on vinyl labels has become a seal of quality for record collectors, music historians, and aficionados, while his sound has been used by countless samplers in the hip-hop world including Kanye West, A Tribe Called Quest, The Fugees, MF Doom, and Madlib. But in comparison to the post-mortem renown of his sound, or the music he created and the artists he supported while he was alive, Stepney is a greatly under-appreciated figure… a genius relegated to the shadows.

The Album

Step on Step

Step on Step – which comes almost 50 years after Stepney departed this earth – is the enigmatic producer's eponymous debut album and arguably the first time his abundant, inherent brilliance is pulled completely out of the shadows into unobstructed light. It's an album full of creative compositional seedlings, written, performed, and recorded by Stepney, alone in the basement of his home on the Southside of Chicago, between the late 1960s and early 1970s, using just primitive drum machines, early-gen Moog synthesizers, pianos, vibraphones, and a few other instrumental accessories. Considering he's an artist who's modest renown has been focused on his epic symphonic arrangements, for making avant-pop music incorporating the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and for his psychedelic "orchestral soul" sound – it's especially notable that this album is an unprecedented look at Stepney engaged in the simplest, most genuine and bare bones process of creating music.

The Stepney
Sisters

The otherwise unrecorded, previously unnamed original compositions of Step on Step were given their titles by Stepney’s daughters Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté Stepney, whose voices are also heard throughout the album, telling stories and sharing memories about their father. The Stepney Sisters, who produced this album over many years, have long been engaged in efforts to celebrate their father’s legacy and bring his work into brighter light. They’ve cherished the tape reels left behind by their father in the basement of their home, transferring the audio on multiple occasions, and originally curating the collection of recordings heard on Step on Step for an ultra-limited CD on their own DIY label (The Charles Stepney Masters) in the early 2010s. In Summer 2020, audio from the tapes was re-transferred byTaylor Hales at Electrical Audio in Chicago. The tracks were treated and mixed by Dave Vettraino at International Anthem Studios in Chicago (where the Stepney Sisters’ vocal interludes were also recorded), then the final album program was edited and sequenced by Scott McNiece before mastering by David Allen.

Release Campaign

  • Stepney’s funkier sensibilities take center stage on “Look B4U Leap” – a track that showcases basslines from the low notes on a Fender Rhodes – which he composed and produced at home, in his basement, on the Southside of Chicago, sometime in the late 1960s. Based on the tapes and information we have - this track was likely a compositional sketch he made while simultaneously composing songs for Minnie Riperton and Ramsey Lewis. The digital cover art for this single is an old photo of Charles with his daughter Charlene. Charlene chose the title for this song, saying that "look before you leap" were words she saw written in a notebook at her Aunt (and Kindergarten teacher) Rose Johnson's home. Rose Johnson occasionally wrote lyrics for Charles Stepney's music, including "Completeness" for Minnie Riperton's Stepney-produced debut album 'Come To My Garden'.

  • This is an absolutely epic, iconic moment in music history here: the first ever unveiling of the original, home-recorded compositional demo of “That’s The Way of The World.” The eventual studio version of this song, which was produced and arranged by Stepney for the Earth, Wind & Fire album of the same name, would become one of the biggest recordings ever released by that band. This original 4-track demo version offers us an unprecedented look into the creative process of Charles Stepney as he drafted and crafted beautiful, soulful melodies, intuitively, from his fingertips to an eventual platinum record, like a true legend.

  • Together with his wife Rubie, Charles Stepney brought three daughters into the world - Eibur, Charlene, and Chanté. Eibur (whose first name is “Rubie” spelled backwards) says that her father used to rely on their mother Rubie for her intuitiveness (when he was faced with a difficult decision, he would often ask her: “Rubie, is God telling you anything?”). The depth of trust and faith that is only possible in the purest and truest of love/life partnership can be heard emanating from the sweet melodies of this tune. It was an unnamed track from the basement tapes Stepney left behind. But Stepney’s daughters chose to name it, appropriately, “Rubie & Charles.”

  • This is the original, compositional demo of “Black Gold.” Stepney would first produce and arrange a proper studio version of this song at Chess Records’s Ter Mar studios in Chicago, for the 1969 debut album of legendary guitarist Phil Upchurch. And later, in the early 1970s, he would re-arrange the tune with lyrics written by Richard Rudolph, for The New Rotary Connection featuring Minnie Riperton, under the new title: “I Am The Black Gold of the Sun.” Rotary Connection’s version of this song is possibly one of Stepney’s greatest known works – it’s a multi-faceted, orchestral arrangement of epic proportions – which makes it all the more incredible that we are able to share this bare bones demo version of the song, where Stepney’s creative compositional process can be heard in it’s most intuitive state, as he tinkers with piano, acoustic guitar, and bass, over a skittering hi-hat loop.
