Asher Gamedze: Turbulence and Pulse in Johannesburg

Words and photos by Tseliso Monaheng

At the same time that the winter cold was making its way inland – the result of currents regulated by the flow of coastal breeze from cities like Cape Town, where the drummer and composer Asher Gamedze is mostly based – Chiesa di Pazzo Lupi, a fairly recent development in the Joburg performance circuit, played host to the launch of Turbulence and Pulse, Gamedze’s sophomore album and maiden voyage on the International Anthem label. The Mushroom Hour co-release had the nerdy, the hip, the academic and the interested hooked for close to two hours as Gamedze and the hard-hitting grooves of his core band of magicians – Thembinkosi Mavimbela (bass), Robin Fassie (trumpet), and Buddy Wells (t. sax) – reverberated through the room. It was a night for the books, and further confirmation that when it comes to style and taste, the internationally renowned drummer's got plenty to offer.

Tracing The Lines is a creative exploration of International Anthem Recording Co. and the community that surrounds it.
