Zwei abende. Two evenings of performance, collaboration and creation; an almost unbelievable convergence of international musicians in Berlin.
Instigated by IARC, the event will feature musicians from our label's globe-spanning roster (some from USA, some from UK, some from NL, and even a couple now based in DE) alongside various Berlin-based musicians (organized by Niko de Paula Lefort of Archipel), all of whom are cut from similar progressive, boundary-defying, improvisational jazz/not-jazz modern musical cloth.
Performances will take place on the main stage of multidisciplinary community-based arts space 90mil, with interstitial sets in the garden outside the venue happening between stage sets.
The main stage on the first evening (June 4th) will open with Brazilian artists (now based in Berlin) M Takara & Carla Boregas. The first outdoor interstitial set will feature Zwei Abende co-curator Niko de Paula Lefort in duo with Egyptian guitarist Maurice Louca. Returning to the main stage, there will be a performance by Amsterdam-based artists Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti & Frank Rosaly, doing music from their new MESTIZX project (released by International Anthem & Nonesuch Records this Spring) with a legendary ensemble of musicians traveling from Chicago including Ben LaMar Gay, Ben Boye, and Matthew Lux. The second outdoor set features Italian-born, UK based bassist Ruth Goller in an improvisational duo with UK-born, Berlin based saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi (both of whom released new albums on IARC in March of 2024). The night closes on the mainstage with percussionist Bex Burch – the UK-born, now Berlin-based artist whose debut album There is only love and fear was released by International Anthem in October of 2023 – in a special ensemble featuring violinist/technologist Laurel Pardue and several others TBA.
The second evening (June 5th) opens with a first-time duo of Chicago folklorist Ben LaMar Gay and Berlin-based Brazilian drummer Mariá Portugal on the main stage; followed by an outdoor solo autoharp set by LA-via-Chicago musician Ben Boye (who’s known for his work with Ty Segall, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, and Joshua Abrams, among many others). The second stage set will be the largest of Zwei Abende. Organized and led by Niko de Paula Lefort, the Berlin Orchaostra will feature Dudù Kouate, Camila Nebbia, Steve Heather, Zeynep Ayşe Hatipoğlu, and Sam Langer. The second outdoor set will be a duo of basses – Ruth Goller together with Chicago sage Matthew Lux (of Isotope 217, Iron & Wine, and Exploding Star Orchestra renown). The third set on the main stage will be a performance led by Los Angeles based modular synthesist Jeremiah Chiu, improvising in a first time combination with saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi and drummer Frank Rosaly. Zwei Abende will culminate with a special performance by a trio that hasn’t played together since the day they first met in 2017: the London-based tuba player known for his work with Sons of Kemet Theon Cross, cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, and world renowned drummer, producer, and founding artist of International Anthem, Makaya McCraven.
Throughout nights, there will be DJ sets before, between, and after performances from International Anthem crew members including Alejandro Ayala, Scottie McNiece, David Allen and Dave Vettraino.
Doors open at 8pm on both nights. The entrance fee is 20 euros per night. Non-members of 90mil will be asked to pay a yearly membership fee of 5 euros.
