A very special global event... inspired by the artistic principles and thematic framework of Damon Locks & Rob Mazurek's forthcoming album New Future City Radio ("community, transformation, and a pirate radio broadcast from the future")... to take place on the album's July 28th retail street date...
We're very happy to partner with Chicago's Lumpen Radio, a whole bunch of fellow record labels, and a growing list of independent record stores to deliver a collectivist action under the umbrella of:
TOMORROW IS LISTENING
24-hour broadcast transmitting live and direct via Lumpen Radio to independent record shops worldwide, taking place from midnight to midnight Chicago time on Friday July 28th.
The program will feature curated mixes (including some new and some unreleased music) from an all-star cast of record labels, including:
Star Creature, Sonorama, Luaka Bop, Brownswood, Strut, Nonesuch, Figure & Ground, Dolfin, Sinking City, Spiritmuse, Olindo, Far Out, Northern Spy, NNA Tapes, bié, RINGS, Mushroom Hour, Numero Group, International Anthem, and more.
The broadcast will culminate with a grand finale performance by Damon Locks & Rob Mazurek, live from Co-Prosperity in Chicago (more details on that public event later in this email).
TOMORROW IS LISTENING will be available on terrestrial FM radio in the Chicago area via Lumpen Radio (105.5 FM); but more importantly, we're signing up a growing list of independent record shops across the globe who will be tuning in. That means: you can properly participate in this special day by leaving your solo reality tunnel, heading out IRL and listening to this broadcast in the community of friends and fellow music lovers at the cultural/communal sanctuary of your local record shop. In a hyperactive 40-minute, 18-track suite that runs like a boombox mixtape, Damon Locks & Rob Mazurek contemplate community, transformation, and the future through the programmatic format of a pirate radio station for the people.

These two artists have worked together from the peak days of the late 90s / early 00s Chicago music scene up through the present day, which has seen Locks featured as lead vocalist of multiple critically-acclaimed Exploding Star Orchestra (ESO) albums composed/produced by Mazurek and released by International Anthem (IARC) in 2020 (Dimensional Stardust) and 2023 (Lightning Dreamers). In recent years, Locks has also earned great renown from his revolutionary, expansive latter-day gospel/jazz project Black Monument Ensemble (BME), with which he’s released two albums on IARC (2019’s Where Future Unfolds and 2021’s NOW). New Future City Radio finds the artists creating a natural but innovatively-assembled blend of the sounds of those two projects, with Locks’s BME-style sample-based sound collage creating compositional beds underneath the signature Orson Welles-like vocal delivery he’s developed through his work with ESO, alongside Roland SP flourishes and arresting brass improvisations by Mazurek. The album is also filled with vignettes as fractured radio transmissions, featuring contributions by guests including Roberto Lange (Helado Negro) and Mauricio Takara (Sao Paulo Underground).

Please join us for a celebration of Damon Locks & Rob Mazurek's new International Anthem release. New Future City Radio is the first duo collaboration by the two longtime collaborators – both certified Chicago music legends – in which they share electronic duties but each take the lead when needed with their own specialties: Mazurek on trumpet and Locks on vocals.
The show will be opened with a special debut performance by Ayana Contreras, doing original music and covers from recent and upcoming single releases.

Chicago-based Damon Locks (Black Monument Ensemble) & Marfa-based Rob Mazurek (Exploding Star Orchestra, Chicago Underground) perform in celebration of their first duo album New Future City Radio, which releases July 28th. Locks & Mazurek present a live sonic collage of poetry, percussions, electronics and trumpet, recalling an avant garde echo of early 90s Bomb Squad or late 90s Def Jux as voiced by Orson Welles or Electric Miles.
Lori Scacco opens the night with a solo performance of her signature narrative synthesizer works. DJ sets by King Hippo before and between sets. Co-presented by International Anthem & Qobuz, as part of their quarterly series in The Sound Room.
