ARTIST IN RESIDENCE
Makaya McCraven is Artist-in-Residence for the upcoming 2025 NYC Winter Jazz Festival. Between January 9th and 14th, Makaya will do five shows at five venues in five unique combinations, including multiple performances commemorating the 10-year anniversary of his breakout IARC debut album In The Moment.

INTERNATIONAL ANTHEM CELEBRATES 10 YEARS OF IN THE MOMENT
A night of spontaneous composition featuring Makaya and others, with DJ sets by Gilles Peterson.

On December 2nd, 2024, we marked the ten-year anniversary of our first release. With a full decade under our belt – ten years of commitment to a growing community of artists, and our original mission statement ("to vitalize demand for boundary defying music," among other things) – we've spent a lot of time thinking about how we'd like to celebrate this milestone. What we keep coming back to is: desire to use this opportunity to revisit and revivify music and memories from our first decade; but keeping true to our ethos of always looking forward, all the way.
In that spirit, across 2025, we'll be rolling out a series of releases and events under the IA11 banner. Celebrating our eleventh year. Doing our best to retell essential, foundational stories from our past, while keeping our hearts and minds fixed on the present. Trying to establish new standards that can help carry our mission through another decade of work – and hopefully more.
We created an emblem for IA11 with a vibrating interpretation of a chrysanthemum as the central symbol. Aside from just loving the delicious golden nectar that comes from the leaves of this flower, for us, the image of the chrysanthemum resonates as a symbol of longevity and rejuvenation. Two of the driving intentions behind this IA11 effort.
At NYC WJF, we'll kick off the year by celebrating the festival's Artist-in-Residence Makaya McCraven – who also happens to be perhaps the most foundational artist in our label community. Our work with Makaya dates back to before we even were a "record label." The first album we released together, In The Moment, was a breakthrough for both Makaya and us in our early days. So it's particularly special that Makaya has chosen to dedicate so much of this residency to revisiting the music and spirit of In The Moment, right in time for the ten-year anniversary of its release.
Please join us on January 9th at Nublu, January 10th at Le Poisson Rouge, and January 14th at Public Records as Makaya and various collaborators recall the "Spontaneous Composition" approach that made In The Moment possible. And join us on January 11th at Music Hall of Williamsburg, as Makaya performs arrangements of music from In The Moment with a special large ensemble.
