Available on vinyl for the first time... Kudu is the 2018 debut of Brooklyn-based synth-laced deep-bass outer-space improv duo ANTELOPER (aka jaimie branch on trumpet/electronics and jason nazary on drums/electronics).
Despite being originally released as cassette only, Kudu was hailed as a 'Best Album' of that year by Bandcamp, Pop Matters, Rolling Stone, and more. In Rolling Stone, about Kudu, writer Hank Shteamer said: โThe albumโs collision of fractured beats and pealing, effects-heavy brass suggests a punk-minded update of Miles Davisโ most thrillingly weird Seventies explorations... This is music for serious immersion.โ
The vinyl edition of Kudu is available for pre-order via our Bandcamp page on limited edition "Melted Highlighter" color vinyl (pictured above) or "limousine black" vinyl. Both versions come with a psychedelic Eastside obi strip, a full color insert sheet, and our classic dome-patterned inner-sleeve. The black vinyl version will be in stores worldwide on January 28th, 2022, and both versions will ship to Bandcamp customers shortly before that date.

Reflecting on the record over 3 years later, branch says: "listening back to Kudu produces a three pronged thought process - 1) the immediacy of the music is undeniable, 2) the aliens are coming, and 3) still sounds like us. While Nazary notes โI hear us pushing through, evolving a new shared language exploded from sonic dynamite & cosmic chisel.โ
branch continues: โKudu is the very beginning, the exact start of Anteloper and when I listen back I remember how we were so excited to share this music with the world and Im glad it's gonna see it's propper vinyl release. During the recording of Kudu, jason and I ran our electronics in mono, and while it's not mixed fully mono, that punchiness pervades the sounds in full. Alien lithographic smears and remnants on the windows between us are definitely audible. It's kinda funny, I hear myself barely knowing how to work the delay/looper pedal that 5 years later i can now operate in total darkness, but it doesn't matter - the edge is there, the intentionality is there the lack of mastery doesn't bother me it adds to the Kudu vibe i think. Sometimes you meet a musical partner and you intuitively know that the music is important and must be followed - kudu is the beginning and jason and I are still on that path. space warriors."
