Daniel Villarreal - "In/On" - Out Today

Daniel Villarreal - In/On

Today we are delighted to share "In/On," the newest single by Panamá-born, Chicago-based percussionist Daniel Villarreal, from his forthcoming debut album Panamá 77 (which comes out LP/CD/Digi on May 20th).

This new single follows the album's first lead single “Uncanny” – a track that was called "captivating" by The Fader, and "a pocket-size cinematic experience, like riding on a train through both beaches and deserts along with ghosts" by Remezcla.

“In/On” is another highlight from Villarreal’s Panamá 77 recording sessions with engineer Ben Lumsdaine in the back yard of Chicali Outpost in Los Angeles. The track is built around an improvisation by Villarreal with bassist Anna Butterss and guitarist Jeff Parker, using the first bits of music the three made together as the foundation. It was Fall 2020, so for almost everyone involved, it was the first time gathering for a session since the pandemic started – hence the decision to record outdoors, and hence the joyful vibes you can hear emanating from every tone! The notes spring playfully from Parker's guitar, while Butterss slings around his suspended harmonics with nimble bass guitar counterpoint, and Villarreal propels the tune forward with a trampolining son-jarocho-style drumkit swing.

As Villarreal describes it, “for me, the song is about how we are all IN and ON. As if we are about to start something so you walk in and turn an ON switch.  No one knows what's going to happen after that but we are all into it. We are all IN. I also think it’s a fun reference because in Spanish there is only one word - ‘en’ - for both of those English words ‘in’ and ‘on’.”

Daniel Villarreal - Panamá 77

LP / CD / Digital album out May 20th

Panamá 77 – a vibrant and verdant suite of multi-textural, jazz-laced psychedelic instrumental folk-funk – is the debut album by Panamá-born, Chicago-based drummer, DJ, and our longtime comrade Daniel Villarreal.

Though it’s a debut work in the eyes of the world, Villarreal has long been a widely known and beloved character on the Chicago music scene. On almost any night of the week, you’ll find him DJing at atleast one spot on bustling 18th Street in his home neighborhood of Pilsen. If he’s not there, he’s playing drums with Dos SantosValebol, or The Los Sundowns (all bands he co-leads), or sitting in with Wild Belle or Rudy De Anda.

On 'Panamá 77' he engages a diverse array of friends and collaborators – including Bardo MartinezJeff ParkerAnna ButterssNathan Karagianis (of Dos Santos), Marta Sofia HonerElliot Bergman and Aquiles Navarro – to create a vibrant and verdant suite of multi-textural, jazz-laced psychedelic instrumental folk-funk.
