BLG @ PUBLIC RECORDS
BROOKLYN OCTOBER 29th

Sunday October 29th marks the long-awaited New York City return of the notorious & meritorious Ben LaMar Gay, who will be fresh off a month-long tour of Europe with his ace quartet (ft. guitarist Will Faber, tubaist Matthew Davis, and drummer Tommaso Moretti). Don't miss this rare opportunity to catch BLG & band in the Big Apple, in tour-tight full-flight to boot!

The show kicks off with a very special set of music by a very special human – Tomin – a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, bioinformatician, and poet from Brooklyn, New York. Tomin's primary instruments are the flute, trumpet and alto clarinet, and he participates in the creative music scene as a performer, improvisor, composer and fan. Outside of music, he works in computational genetics, with a focus on oncology. On this occasion, his Tomin'em ensemble will feature Tcheser Holmes on drums, Teiana Davis on keyboards, Clérida Eltimé and Lester St. Louis on cellos, Alfredo Colón on alto saxophone and flute, Linton Smith on trumpet and tambourine, with Tomin on assorted winds, keys and percussion.

This show is the latest in our quarterly series International Anthem @ Public Records; another wonderful co-presentation with our friends from Qobuz.

Open Arms To Open Us

Available on LP, CD & Digital

As highlighted in the New York Times, Open Arms to Open Us is a dispatch from “postmodern folklorist” Ben LaMar Gay’s current place in space, filled with imaginative arrangements and his “wise and confiding baritone.”

Produced and recorded at International Anthem Studios in Chicago between March and June of 2021, across sixteen tracks Gay fluently interweaves jazz, blues, ballads, R&B, raga, new music, nursery rhyme, tropicalia, two-step, hip-hop and beyond in a beaming expression of his signature omni-genre “Pan-Americana” brew.

Alongside his own sizable toolkit of instruments (cornet, keyboards, synthesizers, flutes, percussions), Gay surrounds himself with steady bandmates (including Tommaso Moretti on drums, Matthew Davis on tuba, and Rob Frye on woodwinds), while also shining the spotlight on female artists from his cast of regular collaborators (including OHMME singers Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, bassist/vocalist/arranger Ayanna Woods, multi-disciplinary Rwandan artist Dorothée Munyaneza, poet A.Martinez, cellist Tomeka Reid, and vocalists Onye Ozuzu, Gira Dahnee, and Angel Bat Dawid).
