BEN LAMAR GAY Certain Reveries with TOMMASO MORETTI plus PHOTAY and CELIA HOLLANDER
May 12th 2023 at Co-Prosperity
Please join us for a long overdue celebration of living legend Ben LaMar Gay's latest album Certain Reveries – his infra-sonic post-apocalyptic duo hit with drummer Tommaso Moretti that the Chicago Reader called "a pandemic dream worth remembering" after it was released in Fall 2022.
Also performing and making this an even-more rare affair not-to-be-missed are two artists who are traversing the country together, coming from homes on both ends. The New York State based Photay brings his highly evolved, distinctly personal post-dance-music pallet of electro-acoustic atmospheres in the wake of his own Fall 2022 IARC release(s) An Offering (and the subsequent addendum More Offerings, both in collaboration with Carlos Niño). And the Los Angeles born/based Celia Hollander shares her synth-shaped, dada-esque approaches to modern minimalist composition that have brought her great renown across multiple Leaving Records releases.
Selections from Dear Diary (Natasha Rac from Wild Prairie) will set the vibe before, between, and after performances.
Tickets are $15 and available via Local Universe on Eventbrite. There are a limited number of hard tickets available for discounted $10 in person at Wild Prairie on Western Ave. If any tickets are left day-of-show, they'll be available at the door for $20.
*about*
Photay
Photay is the alias of 29-year-old Woodstock, NY-based composer, drummer, DJ, producer and musical polymath Evan Shornstein. As Photay, he has recorded a quartet of albums that organically bring together intricate chamber-pop arrangements, post-techno electronic textures, and a love of Black Atlantic polyrhythms. With the London-based Afro-Latin group Penya, and the Tanzanian gogo musician Msafiri Zawose, Photay has made an album under the name WEMA (Swahilifor “kindness” and “benevolence”), a multicultural celebration of rhythm and folkways. Photay’s music is built on positive intentions. Truly.

Certain Reveries
Cassette/Digital album out now
In the tradition of toddler crayon scribbles on perfectly painted bedroom walls, composer Ben LaMar Gay expands on the teachings of Alabama star spirits and presents a collection of work involving sound, fabric, movement, rivers, shadows, Lagosian memories, light and listening.
Also on the note of BLG... we've just released a digital version of another installment from our first zine, Tracing The Lines.
"Is knowing an artist a prerequisite for enjoyment?
This piece was penned by zine editor David Brown who asks himself the literal and figurative question "Who Is Ben LaMar Gay?" before digressing into analysis of 'The Tale of Not Knowing', 'The Grand Marketing Gods', and the problematic latter day consumerist tendency to embrace artists only after they've been re-presented, post-career, by detached curators.
"But what about the actual mysteries of our time?" he asks/writes. "It seems easy to believe in some mythical old cowboy strolling into a sepia-toned studio with one mic at the center of a small room because that is some top-tier make believe kinda shit that just doesn't exist anymore (if it ever really did). But, again, what about those people and those stories living in parallel with us as we go about our very real day? How do we approach and discuss them? Even The Grand Marketing Gods seem to be at a loss for how to classify and sell them. We can't believe in and simultaneously reject 'The Tale of Not Knowing', so we have to wrap our beautiful little heads around the truth that these people and these stories live among us. Ben LaMar Gay is one of them."
