*Out This Week* Ruth Goller's skylla

Ruth Goller
skylla

"Ruth transports me to places I didn't know before. She dismantles my heart. Her compositions move like brushstrokes on a black starry canvas that land in dilated reveries, to then meander like singular translucent swaying sculptures.
Absolutely beautiful!"

Ibelisse Guardia Ferragutti

“Ruth Goller and Skylla feed resonant spaces with nutritious frequencies that allow the support beams to finally purr.”
- Ben LaMar Gay

"Listening to skylla feels like stepping into another universe. The bass harmonics with the texture of Ruth's voice create a wholly new instrument that results in a record of truly unique compositions. I've enjoyed listening to this record in the moments right after the sun goes down, letting the colors and textures of the record fully fill the night sky."
- Macie Stewart

"Ruth is my favorite type of musician - the kind who create a sound/world that is uniquely personal but also very welcoming. With Skylla, Ruth conjures up a music that seems as old as the hills, yet still feels like tomorrow."
- Matt Lux

"Utterly unique, uncompromising and incomparably compelling…
Does that make any sense?!? In short - Ruth is a total badass!!"

- Tom Skinner

"Ruth's solo material is some of the most refreshing and singular I've heard in decades. She chooses to use her virtuosity of sound carefully, transcending a masterful musician to a visionary artist. Ruth's bass harmonics are like monoliths, appearing and disappearing from her playground, both delicate and impenetrable. Surprising, crystalline vocal figures spin webs over curious, dark & clashing harmony. Sensational music, through and through."
- Frank Rosaly

"Skylla changed my ears and, I believe, the ears of the world... I can hear a before and after Skylla in the music that is being made and in the permission we have to be as much ourselves as Ruth is herself. She continues to find new depths of beauty and strength and presence, so much so that it shocks my eyes open in glee. This is what I've been longing for. Something real. Congratulations Ruth, I celebrate you and I celebrate this album reaching more ears! Forever record."
- Bex Burch

"She is one so deft as to play un-self-conscious of her mastery, and you can know this through feeling her humble nature as a human mere moments before she wields your heart in the high wires of her sound, turning the air above like a pterodactyl of the creative souls glory, without needing to even look, or think, or try."
- Alabaster DePlume

Listen.

...about Ruth Goller...

Italian born, London based Ruth Goller is known for her bass and vocal work with Alabaster DePlume, whose music she elevates in live contexts with her genre-less improvisational intuition. She's also known for work with Bex Burch's Vula Viel, whose DIY label released Goller's solo debut Skylla in 2021. And she is known to creative musicians far and wide, with an incredibly diverse CV that includes performance and recording with Shabaka Hutchings, Rokia Traore, Melt Yourself Down, Sam Amidon, Damon Albarn, and many more.

In March 2024, she released her International Anthem debut SKYLLUMINAExpanding on the wholly original sound Goller established with her solo work on Skylla – i.e. compositions of detuned bass under a spectra of soprano voices she arranged and overdubbed herself – SKYLLUMINA complicates matters as every piece is augmented with a different drummer. “As a bass-player, I love playing with drummers and I decided to focus on my close connection to that instrument and to the amazing people I met in my life who play it,” says Goller. Her accompanists on the album include International Anthem labelmates Bex Burch, Tom Skinner, and Frank Rosaly, as well as prolific British player Sebastian Rochford and longtime Vula Viel collaborator Jim Hart. But more importantly: the music is an immersive hyperfocus for Goller and her patently distinct, singular compositional vision.

"...Goller and guests create a world that is childlike, beatific and slightly terrifying.” - The Guardian (Contemporary Album of the Month, March 2024)
