!!! THEY'RE HERE !!!
That's right, you read it right! This show will celebrate the Chicago homecoming of Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood's new LIVE double LP! That is, the vinyl LPs have FINally landed and cleared customs in the USA!
(If you didn't know: these records have been on an epic journey from the pressing plant in Germany, where they were finished on February 1st, then lost in a port in Hamburg, boated then de-boated then trucked to UK, where they were then re-boated and shipped across the sea, chilled in customs in Charleston for awhile, and are finally now appearing, as pictured above, stacked tall and proud on a pallet at RedEye's warehouse in Hillsborough, NC.)
All of this is to say: these LPs are in Chicago now, and will soon begin shipping out, from our warehouse, to everyone in the US who ordered this album. Many many thanks, again, to everyone who has been waiting patiently... Goddess willing you'll be enjoying this album on wax momentarily.
(( Much love to our man at RedEye, Will Savery, for snapping a fresh photo of this fresh pallet, fresh off the boat! ))
!!! MORE GOOD THINGS TO CELEBRATE !!!
*** Beautiful screen printed posters ***
Adding to the good vibes, we'll be dropping these incredible screen-printed posters (designed by Raimund Wong in London, screenprinted by Elizabeth Kovach in Chicago, pictured above) on the merch table for this Saturday's live stream event on Bandcamp.
Grab a ticket to the show for a chance to grab one of these limited edition beauties! For those who can't make the show: if we have any copies left over we'll be putting them up on our regular Bandcamp merch page shortly after.
...AND MORE GOOD THINGS, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT...
!!! Inaugural Episode of the International Anthem Podcast !!!
Yes, we are launching an International Anthem podcast... Produced and hosted by Chicago radio legend Ayana Contreras, the podcast will color the context of albums released by our label, featuring in-depth interviews with the artists.
For now, the new releases of new episodes will coincide with the retail street dates of new vinyl LPs. Hence, for our inaugural episode, Ayana goes deep with Angel Bat Dawid about her story and the story behind her new LIVE album with Tha Brothahood, which is (at long last) hitting stores in the US.
For the moment the episode is only available via our Anchor.FM page, but it's been submitted for distribution to all the major podcast platforms, so you should be able to listen "wherever you get your podcasts" shortly.
The Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood - LIVE episode, the first of our new podcast, was supported in part by our good friends at 606 Records in Chicago. You can listen to it here, or by clicking the image below:
Angel Bat Dawid & Tha Brothahood
LIVE
“stunning live album” – Brooklyn Vegan
“a brilliant document of how free jazz functions as both exploration and exorcism.” - Pitchfork
"merging spiritual supplication and free-jazz caterwauls with the raw confrontation of performance art." - NPR Music
“Dawid is a force who is not afraid to stand for what she believes in and puts it all into her music.” - Reverb.com
LIVE was released digitally last October to widespread acclaim. It was named "Best New Music" on Pitchfork, and was included in "Best Albums of 2020" lists by WIRE Magazine, Brooklyn Vegan, NPR Music, The Vinyl Factory, and more.
The album was recorded on November 1st, 2019, at Haus der Berliner Festspiele in Berlin, Germany, during JazzFest Berlin. For Angel and Tha Brothahood – which includes Deacon Otis Cooke (vocals, synth), Viktor Le Givens (vocals, auxiliary instruments), Xristian Espinoza (tenor sax, percussion), Norman W. Long (electronics, synths), Dr. Adam Zanolini (double bass, bass guitar, soprano sax, flute, percussion), Isaiah Collier (drums), and Asher Simiso Gamedze (drums) – it was the first stop of their first European tour, and the site of several racially-charged confrontations.
Angel spoke about the show and her difficult experiences at length with Joshua Minsoo Kim in a powerful edition of Tone Glow last October, and more recently with Ted Gaier for the Swiss weekly-paper WOZ.
Angel says: “I hope that this album will uplift and raise awareness to the world that we are still not in a good place when it comes to the relationship between whites other races. Universities, festivals, organizations etc that were built over 50 years ago, even though they have changed outwardly, have not changed internally, and still uphold the principles of their founders, who were racists. We still got a long way to go. And music is a great place to start in repairing this age old, distorted reality.”
Listen to LIVE via our Bandcamp page.
